Shihui Zhang

I design the happy place for Kamaiya. She is a both indoor and outdoor person. Which means she loves indoor activities like reading, watching TV, as well as outdoor activities like hiking and biking. So I wanted to design a space that would provide a transition between indoor and outdoor activities, so that kamaiya could have a quiet and comfortable rest after physical exercise.

Because she loves the feeling of being surrounded by nature, she filled the ground floor of Happy Place with natural elements. At the front of the building, there is a patio that serves as a living room where Kamaiya can occasionally invite her friends over for a chat or a barbecue. At the back, there is a shower for Kamaiya who has finished exercising. And the shower place is extended outwards to become a more public playing pool.

The centrally located courtyard is a node where semi-public spaces are transformed into private spaces. Kamaiya can choose to enter the reading space here, or climb the stairs to the mini-cinema.

I created some comic-style illustrations to describe character’s activity in the space.

Forms such as diagonals and grids are applied not only in the building itself but also outward through the site design. On the sections, the basic shapes are staggered in height. This is also shown in the site at a smaller scale.
