The clown is a historical character with trans-cultural and trans-personal significance. The clown’s costume, make-up, and antics can be viewed as expressions from a deep arch e typal spaces. The clown, culturally and personally, serves many functions. Fostering empathy, facilitating an “ego-self axis,” and providing joy in the human experience.
We designed this collective dwelling that will act as a Sanctuary for a diverse group of clown types, for artistic healing and performances through community engagement and through the use of multi-purpose assembly spaces. This dwelling will also promote connection and self-discovery through clown activation programs.
For this project, we chose five different clown types to direct our forms and programs. We have The Character Clown, the Jester Clown, The Hobo Clown, the Mime Clown, and The Rodeo Clown. Our forms connect with each other through stairs, voids, and roofs. These forms surround the central program of our site, which is a rodeo. We derived our layout and forms through precedents of form from Architect John Hejduk.
